“The interdisciplinary course provided students multiple opportunities to build new relationships with one another and people working on the ground to address inequity in Knoxville. In collaboration with Knoxville’s chapter of the NAACP, Community Defense of East Tennessee (CDET), The Bottom, and Socially Equal Energy Efficient Development (SEEED), our cohort conducted focus groups with underrepresented high school graduates and their families to talk about school safety and restorative justice. Throughout the semester, we developed the skills necessary to facilitate these complex conversations, and I found being included in community-centered dialogue incredibly enriching. The course made it possible for me to form and foster ongoing connections with cultural and community organizers committed to creating a safer Knoxville for all.”

—Vivian Swayne, PhD student in Sociology
